Mens Race Champions

Izzy (Islwyn)John
Brockworth, Gloucester

Tributes paid to Brockworth cheese rolling champion 'Izzy' John who died on 11th June 2015 at the age of 72

A builder by trade, Izzy was also a popular figure in Brockworth pubs, where he regularly sung ballads.

Izzy's son Danny John, who lives in Brockworth, described his father as a "fun character."

He said: "He was an excellent father. He taught me his trade and he was very well respected in the building industry.

"He loved the cheese rolling because he was from Brockworth. It's a Brockworth tradition. When you're from the area you see it as a rite of passage."

Izzy won his first race in 1957, winning two cheeses that year, aged 14.

His mother, Lizzie Hannah John, hid all his right shoes that year to stop him from running. So Izzy entered the roll wearing only left footed shoes.

He won 11 more cheeses until he stopped entering in 1964. But he ran his final race wearing his best suit, which he ruined.

Izzy, who had broken his ankle at one cheese roll, was forbidden by his wife Lana from running again for fear of injury. But he returned for the last time in 1982, this time to roll the cheese for one of the men's races.

"He hated cheese," said Danny. "He used to give it to old people's homes. It was more about the spirit of the competition for him."
